World Mental Health Day Promotes Equity
October 31, 2024

We were pleased to collaborate with the World Federation for Mental Health on making World Mental Health Day 2024 on October 10th a unique and exciting experience. This year’s global theme was: It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace. Click here to view our Press Release!

Each year, World Mental Health Day aims to advance global and community solutions for addressing mental illness by raising awareness, reducing stigma, empowering communities, encouraging greater investment from key stakeholders, and celebrating achievements.

Highlights from This Year’s Campaign

This year’s World Mental Health Day (WMHD) campaign, Equity Works, was a success! In partnership with the World Federation for Mental Health and 25 participating Clubhouses and Coalitions from our global network, we championed equity – a key part of the Clubhouse approach to recovery – in the workplace and in society via a social media campaign and local WMHD events on October 10. Here are just a few Clubhouse highlights:

Austin Clubhouse, TX, USA: Hosted its first flagship event since 2019. “It was a fantastic opportunity to reunite our community, with support from local leaders, including our potential future mayor, the sheriff, & representatives from our mental health authority. Member Megan Barbour shared her inspiring recovery story & helped us debut a new video about the Clubhouse. We’re also proud to announce that we raised $32,000 for our program at this event!”

Clubhouse Gibraltar, Gibraltar: Held an “open door celebration” in the morning “We invited the local community, friends and supporters, Government ministers, sponsors, organizations such as TEP providers, health services, and government departments, social services etc. It was very well attended. Then in the afternoon we were invited by the Gibraltar Health Authority to take part in an awareness event, where we had an information stall along with other organizations and charities

Empowerment Clubhouse, CA, USA: Hosted a Kites in the Sky event at Rodeo Beach. It was a fun-filled afternoon with guests flying an exciting array of kites. The event raised awareness about the Clubhouse & equity in the workforce. Watch the video here.

Frontier House, CO, USA: Hosted an Open House, attended by over 100 people representing different local agencies. “We were able to focus on this year’s mission of raising awareness, empowering the community, & encouraging investment from those who attended. We had one of our employment partners, Ms. Danielle Bock (Director of Nutrition Services for Greeley-Evans School District 6) as our keynote speaker, delivering a powerful speech about the amazing possibilities & benefits employers can expect when they work with a Clubhouse as an employment partner. The event made the front page of the Greeley Tribune!

Pathways Clubhouse, BC, Canada: Invited about 80 people from the Richmond Chamber of Commerce to visit the Clubhouse which included a tour, refreshments & a brief presentation on the employment program & the difference it makes in members’ lives. “It was such wonderful community event that led to so much connection. The evening was a huge success!”

Progress Place, Toronto, Canada: “We had two amazing events celebrating World Mental Health Day! We collaborated with our employment partner, the Waterfront BIA, and we were able to educate community members about the importance of equity in the workplace. Two news outlets stopped by to highlight the event and our Clubhouse was showcased on the evening news. Through the event we were able to spread awareness to the community about World Mental Health Day, Progress Place, Clubhouse International, and our employment partnership with The Waterfront BIA. We ended off the day with an in-house employment celebration. It was an inspiring evening showcasing member testimonials and highlighting the importance of work in recovery.

Our 2024 WMHD Campaign: EQUITY WORKS!

This year, Clubhouse International joined with participating Clubhouse International Clubhouses as we championed the positive impact of equity on mental health. Equity, a critical aspect of the Clubhouse approach to recovery, helps empower individuals and transform communities.

“Mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, are pervasive in workplaces globally, impacting productivity, attendance, and overall performance. When left untreated, the staggering economic cost is estimated at US$1 trillion annually by the WHO.” ~World Federation of Mental Health

Through this year’s World Mental Health Day campaign, we championed equality for people living with mental illness in the workplace and promoted best practices that create cultures where everyone has the opportunity to contribute productively and to thrive.

We aim to advance equity and address inequality in the workplace and society through Clubhouse Employment programs and the side-by-side work of Clubhouse members and staff.

Empowering Individuals Through Equity

How Clubhouses Promote the Importance of Equity

The Clubhouse Model of psychosocial rehabilitation works because it is a community-based approach to recovery built on the idea that people living with mental illness should have equal opportunity to work and contribute to society.

Equity is a key to recovery: our employment programs offer members opportunities and support as they (re)enter the workforce; and members work alongside Clubhouse staff as equals in managing the Clubhouse.

We encourage Clubhouses to promote the equity aspect of the Clubhouse Model by collaborating with local employment partners. These partnerships create more opportunities for people with mental illness to learn professional and social skills, find employment, and reduce the stigma around mental illness.

Here are some examples of how equity works at for Clubhouse members:

Yahara House, Madison Wisconsin USA

My first TEP (Transitional Employment Placement) saved me from living on the street. I was homeless and living at Tellurian’s THP. I had been there for six months with no income or benefits, and they were growing impatient with my inability to sustain work. My first TEP was working for Journey Mental Health Center as a file clerk. The money I earned was just enough to allow me to get a room at Porchlight on Brooks Street. It was modest, to say the least, but it beat living on the street as winter set in. That job was the first step to my ascent out of homelessness and poverty.”– Yahara House associate member Peter R.

Stepping Stone Clubhouse, Australia

Working side-by-side with staff, members are included in every aspect of the operation of Clubhouse programs. In fact, the Clubhouse is intentionally understaffed so that it could not operate without the assistance and involvement of the membership. Through participation in the three work units (Employment, Clerical, Administration and Training; Reception and Media; Hospitality), members engage in a range of meaningful activities that boost self-esteem and help prepare members for other employment or education opportunities within the community. On average, 60 members attend the Clubhouse each day, and last financial year, over 600 members were active in the Clubhouse
