Comprehensive Clubhouse Training

Comprehensive Clubhouse Training is designed for:

• Programs transitioning from another service approach to the Clubhouse Model
• Developing and established Clubhouses seeking to strengthen implementation of the Model
• Members, staff, boards, and administrators involved in supporting Clubhouse development and growth

Comprehensive Clubhouse Training is designed to provide participants with an immersive experience of the Clubhouse Model – not simply an introduction to individual practices or programs. The training focuses on the values, philosophy, structures, and daily practices that support effective implementation of the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs™.

The two-week format allows participants the time needed to experience the Clubhouse Model in practice, reflect on what they observe, and begin developing an understanding of how the Standards are implemented within their own Clubhouse community. This extended experience provides the time needed to understand how the different components of the Clubhouse Model work together and begin developing an action plan for implementation within their own Clubhouse.

While two weeks represents a significant commitment, the training experience is designed to create lasting benefits for the entire Clubhouse community – not only for those who participate.

The role of an Administrator differs from the roles of members and staff, and the training structure reflects these different responsibilities.

During the first part of training, members and staff focus on developing a practical understanding of the Clubhouse Model, including the Work-Ordered Day, member and staff relationships, unit organization, reach out, employment, education, and other core practices that they will implement daily.

Administrators participate with the goal of understanding the philosophy, practices, and organizational supports necessary to help the Clubhouse successfully implement its Action Plan. Their role is to help ensure that the Clubhouse has the resources, structures, and support needed to carry out its action plan.

All Clubhouse International Training Centers deliver the same core Comprehensive Clubhouse Training curriculum. The curriculum is reviewed and strengthened through ongoing collaboration between Clubhouse International and the Training Center network.

Each Training Center also brings the experience and perspective of its own Clubhouse community. We encourage Clubhouses to explore available training opportunities and select a Training Center that best meets their needs, schedule, and learning goals.

Each Training Center provides participants with a detailed schedule outlining the daily training activities. Training days are structured and include opportunities for observation, discussion, participation, and group reflection.

While the schedule is intensive, participants have opportunities for personal time, informal connection, and activities outside of the formal training sessions.

Participants complete Comprehensive Clubhouse Training with: 

• A deeper understanding of the Clubhouse Model and the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs™
• Practical experience with key areas of Clubhouse practice, including:
  
  • The Work-Ordered Day
  • Employment opportunities, including Transitional, Supported, and Independent Employment
  • Supported Education
  • Housing and community supports
  • Social programming
  • Clubhouse governance and administrative structures
• A written Action Plan identifying goals and next steps for continued development
• Increased understanding of the role of Clubhouse International and the Accreditation process
• Continued connection to the international Clubhouse community

Training fees are paid directly to the Training Center providing the training. Training fees support the costs associated with delivering the training experience, including training resources, lodging, and other program-related expenses.

Each Training Center establishes its own payment process. Clubhouses should contact their selected Training Center for specific payment requirements and deadlines. 

Comprehensive Clubhouse Training and Accreditation are complementary parts of Clubhouse International’s quality improvement process. Training provides members, staff, and leaders with the knowledge and practical experience needed to strengthen implementation of the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs™.

While Comprehensive Clubhouse Training is strongly encouraged and is an important part of developing a Standards-consistent Clubhouse, Accreditation is determined through a comprehensive review of a Clubhouse’s implementation of the Standards. Participation in training alone does not determine Accreditation outcomes.

Comprehensive Clubhouse Training is designed to support continued growth after participants return home. Depending on the training option selected, Clubhouses may receive a post-training consultation visit approximately 6–9 months after training to review progress on their Action Plan and discuss ongoing development.
