Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland Honored at World Seminar 2019

Click here to read Dr. Brundtland’s Acceptance Speech at World Seminar 2019!!

Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and Director-General Emeritus of the World Health Organization, was the very first recipient of the prestigious Rudyard n. Propst Award, conferred by Clubhouse International in recognition of individuals who make extraordinary contributions to improving the lives of people with mental illness. Dr. Brundtland has been a longtime advocate for better mental health services worldwide, and a supporter of Clubhouse programs for many years.

Clubhouse International hosted the Clubhouse International World Seminar 2019 from September 28 through October 3, 2019, in Lillestrøm, Norway. The event was co-hosted with our two Norwegian partners, Fontenehus Norge and Fontenehuset i Oslo.

The award is named after Rudyard n. Propst, the founder and first Executive Director of Clubhouse International, who first created Clubhouse programs as an international movement and evidence-based practice. The award itself was designed and created by sculptor Kristina Kossi, winner of the top award for sculpture, “Barbara Newington Award Traditional Sculpture” juried by Stephanie L. Herdrich of the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the American Artists Professional League’s 2018 Exhibit.

World Mental Health Day Call to Action: Speak Your Mind!

October 10, 2019 was World Mental Health Day; this year’s theme is Suicide Prevention. Every 40 seconds someone dies by suicide.

Throughout the month of October, we are joining the World Health Organization (WHO), International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), United for Global Mental Health (UGMH), and World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to improve awareness of the significance of suicide as a global public health problem; improve knowledge of what can be done to prevent suicide; reduce the stigma; and let people who are struggling know that they are not alone.

We’re asking our supporters, Clubhouses and Members to speak up on World Mental Health Day to end the silence and fight for action. Click here, and follow the instructions on screen to record a 40-second message, thus adding your voice to the global movement that is calling for quality mental healthcare for all.

It’s time to take action. We hope you’ll join us! We recently took this picture at our World Seminar 2019, showing our 400+ participants from 100 Clubhouses across 20 countries taking part.

Also, in a related development, the Museum of Lost and Found Potential, created by Speak Your Mind in partnership with HSBC, will share 16 portraits of people from around the world through video, sound and real or imagined artefacts. One of the stories is a Clubhouse Member story – Paula Boyd, from California.

Remember: please join us in speaking your mind for mental health this October!

About Our Hosts: Clubhouse International, Fontenehus Norway, and Fontenehuset i Oslo Welcome You!

Clubhouse International is a global non-profit, non-governmental organization that works to end social and economic isolation for people living with mental illness by developing, training and supporting Clubhouse model programs in communities across the world. Clubhouses are community-based centers that offer members opportunities for friendship, employment, education, wellness support and help accessing healthcare and social services through a single-caring and safe environment. Clubhouses provide a welcoming environment and a place to belong; and hope for a satisfying and successful future. There are currently nearly 300 Clubhouses in 30 countries around the world. Every two years, Clubhouse International hosts a World Seminar offering a multitude of innovative training sessions. World Seminars offer opportunities for participants to network with Clubhouses around the world, mental health advocates, and people with lived experience.

Fontenehus Norge is the coalition for the 14 Norwegian Clubhouses in Drammen, Tromsø, Bergen, Oslo, Oslo East, Bærum, Hønefoss, Rygge, Kongsberg, Stavanger, Harstad, Asker, Gjøvik and Trondheim. Fontenehus Norge has three employed staff and a board of Directors. The coalition mainly works with political influence and starting new clubhouses.

Fontenehuset i Oslo, Holbergs gate 5, opened in 2000 and has been accredited since 2003. In 2017 we started to welcome colleagues from around the world when we became Clubhouse International’s 12th Training Base. Today, Fontenehuset i Oslo has 700 members with an average daily attendance of 52, and 13 staff, divided between 3 work units.

About Lillestrøm, Norway

Lillestrøm is a town located some 18 km (11 mi) east-northeast of Oslo, the capital city of Norway. With a population of some 14,000 inhabitants. The name means “the little [part of] Strøm”, Strøm being the name of an old and large farm (Old Norse: straumr, which also meant “stream” as well).

Lillestrøm’s history dates back to the times river powered sawmills came into use for the production of building materials. Later Lillestrøm got its own steam sawmill which laid the base for the development of the area which became the town. The area was, by and large, a moss covered swamp-like area, at the time considered almost uninhabitable. However, the almost non-existent property values were judged to be a fair exchange and so the workers started living and settling in the area around the sawmill, and Lillestrøm was born.

Facilities in Lillestrøm include hotels, Norway trade fairs, a brand new cinema, a mall, Lillestrøm torv, restaurants, a high speed commuter train that reaches both Oslo and Gardermoen airport, a community cultural house (kulturhus), a community outdoor swimming pool complex, and a variety of restaurants.
