Improving Mental Health Through Wellness
Wellness is a holistic approach to health that is vital for improving outcomes among people living with mental illness. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) had identified 8 dimensions of wellness that influence one another and affect a person’s overall health and quality of life.
Why Is Wellness Important for Mental Health?
According to the World Health Organization, people with severe mental health conditions die prematurely – as much as two decades early – due to preventable physical conditions. For example, people with mental illness experience diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, hypertension, and obesity at 1.5 or 2 times the rate of the general population, among other effects such as exhaustion and mood changes. Wellness can decrease risk factors leading to premature death among individuals with behavioral health conditions.
How Can Clubhouses Promote Wellness Among Members?
We encourage Clubhouses to create and promote programming into the Work-Ordered Day centered around developing and maintaining healthy lifestyles. Health and wellness programming at Clubhouses is proven to reverse the numerous adverse health trends experienced by members, and supports member access to primary and psychiatric care, care management, and home and community-based services. Healthy eating, physical activity, recreation and social activities all contribute to better wellness. Here are some examples of how some Clubhouses are promoting wellness:
- Create and manage a garden to produce healthy meals
- Develop programming centered around healthy eating and sports
- Incorporate wellness into everyday activities such as after-lunch walks, structured workout groups, yoga, gardening
- Smoking reduction/cessation resources and support
- Nutrition focused meal planning and preparation
- Workshops on the promotion of physical and nutritional health
- Weekly mindful movement program
- Mindfulness and meditation
Clubhouse Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France
“At Clubhouse Bordeaux, we are developing a health and well-being program centered around healthy eating and sports. A good state of physical health plays an essential role in the recovery of people living with a mental disorder. This program is intended to be preventive because treatments related to this type of disease increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, and also promote weight gain, which has an impact on self-esteem.”
