Cost-Effectiveness of the Clubhouse Model
Our Clubhouses provide communities around the world with a cost-effective solution for reversing the devastating impact of mental illness on society, and for helping people who live with mental illness achieve their full potential.
Recent studies show that Clubhouses achieve tangible results for members and their communities:

Funding received from donors has been dedicated to our primary purpose: helping communities open and grow Clubhouses, where people with mental illness can go to get their lives back. Taken together, these programs have contributed substantially to the continuing expansion of the Clubhouse model around the world as the most cost-effective solution for counteracting the devastating effects of mental illness on people, their families and their communities.
Our support of new Clubhouse Startup Groups led 15 of them in Norway, Mexico and the U.S. to start new Clubhouses and join us in 2020. We are currently working with 54 Startup Groups in 19 countries, including Greece, Kenya and Turkey, who are working to start new Clubhouses.
Clubhouse International Accreditation™continues to make great strides. Today, 80% of all Clubhouses are Accredited compared to just 46% in 2014. Accreditation is our worldwide standard of quality and a mark of their deep commitment to excellence.
Our New Clubhouse Development (NCD) Training program fosters the creation of community-based boards that are well prepared to insure the long-term sustainability of their Clubhouses. Our first virtual program was held in July 2021, attended by 60 participants representing 10 Startup Groups. We have now trained 109 new Startup Groups from across the globe; approximately 80% of them have successfully started new Clubhouses!
In 2019, we provided 43,536 hours of training to 204 unique groups involving 479 individuals. We also held a World Seminar in Norway, attended by 400 individuals representing Clubhouses and Coalitions from all around the world. During the pandemic in 2021, we held our very first Virtual World Seminar, welcoming over 1300 participants. We also converted our training programs to virtual training and webinars.
We continue to develop and enhance research approaches to measure Clubhouse member outcomes and the effectiveness of our Clubhouse model, which is also included in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Approved Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.
Clubhouse International’s leadership, member Clubhouses and Coalitions are active in social, government and mental health advocacy efforts worldwide. As part of these global efforts, our staff or representatives participate in and present the Clubhouse model at many mental health forums and events.
We continue to educate the public and the media to help end the stigma surrounding mental illness and improve awareness of how Clubhouses save lives and livelihoods. In 2022 an in-person World Seminar was held on September 17-22 and attracted over 600 participants from 14 countries, 32 U.S. states, and nearly 170 Clubhouses, in addition to several global mental health organizations and stakeholders. Guest speakers included Dévora Kestel, Director of Mental Health and Substance Use, World Health Organization, who opened the proceedings.

Clubhouses powerfully demonstrate that people with mental illness can and do lead productive, happy lives. Each Clubhouse we open touches +/- 500 people in need!
